4 Spring Maintenance Tips for Used Vehicles

A technician looks under the hood of a vehicle.

Spring has officially sprung, and with the warmer weather melting away the last of the winter snow, there’s maintenance work to be done on your vehicle to keep it running at peak condition, especially if you own a used vehicle. As such, the knowledgeable staff in our Service Department at Stouffville Toyota have put together 4 helpful spring maintenance tips for used vehicles to keep things running smoothly, including washing and de-salting the undercarriage, switching off your winter tires, checking your wiper blades, as well as your battery and fluids!

1. Wash and De-Salt the Undercarriage

While winter road salt can be extremely helpful in the winter, as it provides better traction and helps to melt away ice, it is highly corrosive to metals. That’s why, in the spring, you need to make sure you’re giving the undercarriage of your used vehicle a thorough wash to get off the salt, with special attention given to the wheel wells, to avoid rust buildup.

Pro Tip from our Service Department: After the wash, put wax on your exterior paint as well for a new-car sheen that’s all ready for the nicer weather.

2. Switch from Winter to All-Season/Summer Tires

Winter tires are designed for staying flexible and in-touch with the road when it’s below freezing, which means they have softer rubber that can wear out more quickly. As such, once you’re sure there’s not another dump of snow coming, take the time to switch back to your all-season or summer tires so your winter tires don’t wear down as much.

Pro Tip from our Service Department: When changing your tires, take the time to look your tires over for damage, tread depth, and mark where they were when you took them off so that you can rotate them for the next winter for even wear.

3. Check and Replace Worn Wiper Blades

Windshield wiper blades typically only last around a year, and more often than not are toast by the time spring hits as ice, snow, and salt during the wintertime can damage them. Stop yourself from having to deal with streaking, smearing, and poor visibility by inspecting your wiper blades, and replacing them if needed.

Pro Tip from our Service Department: Top up your washer fluid while checking your wiper blades, as you want to make sure you have enough to deal with any bugs or grime that come along in the warmer weather.

4. Test the Battery and Check Fluids

Because the cold weather can put a real drain on car batteries, having your battery tested in the spring, especially if you’ve had it for 3 or 4 years, is a very good idea, as it allows you to replace it before it becomes a problem. Inspect and top off all your fluids as well, including oil, transmission fluid, and coolant.

Pro Tip from our Service Department: If you’re uncertain what signs indicate your oil, transmission fluid, or coolant needs replacing/flushing, stop by and see us for a service appointment, where we’ll inspect them for you!
